Choosing a perfect domain is the most important part of web hosting because a domain name represents what your website is all about . so before diving into the types of domain name, let us first understand what domain name is. 

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is a major part of the internet infrastructure. It is the web address of any website which is understood universally. A domain appears in the website address bar. A domain name tells what the website contains off. Usually, domain names are purchased by different website owners to show cast their website in the front of the online world. A domain name is an IP address that connects your computer to the servers. Domain names should be always unique and easy to remember. Top Level Domains (TLD)


A top-level domain is known as an internet extension. It is the most important domain name extension. TLD is widely used because it instantly understands what a website is contained. It recognises the main elements of a website, such as its owner, its origin and its purposes. 


For example, .org will easily inform you that the material on the website is based on a particular organization. Now, as you have got some idea of what it do you mean by TLD. Let's dive into some of its types. 


 1. com - it is the first top-level domain widely and commonly used. It got popular in the mid of '90s and was commercially used worldwide. it was mainly used for businesses, emails and websites.

     

 2. .net - .net is a generic and one of the top-level domains on the internet. it is the short form of network it was mainly introduced for institutional use. It came into existence in 1985. It is mainly popular among service providers and internet service providers. 

 

3. .edu - is the short form of education; educational institutes mainly use it was specially designed for universities worldwide. First, it was mainly started in America, and then it spread worldwide. 


4. .org - it is also a top-level domain.org stands for organisation. Organisations like charities and NGOs mainly use it. Non-profit organisations previously used it. Nowadays, it is used by both non-profit and profit organisations.


 5. Gov - it is a government-sponsored domain name for our government. It is also one of the top-level domain names. In this domain name, state and local agencies are getting registered 

2 Generic Top-Level Domains  (gTLD)

 it is the most commonly used top-level domain. It has codes which are widely used on the web. It is a TLD category which is easily recognised by the suffix attached to the domain. They are the commonly used domain in companies and individuals. They are majorly four types of gTLD, i.e  .com, .net,.org, .co .

3 Sponsored top-level domains

These domains are mainly sponsored by a community which includes an educational institute, museum, associations etc. 

4. Country code top-level domains ( ccTLD)

This domain defines a domain of a particular country's geographic area with a country identification like .ca, us,.uk. All the codes are two letters long and represent a country 

5. Infrastructure top-level domains (ITLD)

Infrastructure top-level domains are used within an internet infrastructure system. They are initially set up into larger systems.
