What is a Domain name's simple definition?

 The domain is a unique name to identify any website. A good domain name will increase your brand recognition. In simple words, a domain name is an address that a user searches in the browser directly so that they can easily access your website. A domain name consists of two parts a actual domain and a top level domain.

Web servers universally understand a domain name, it is used as a web address of any website. It can be a combination of letters and numbers and has been used with various domain name extensions such as .com , .net , etc.


A domain name is a very important part of a website when it comes to launching a website. Without a domain name, you cannot launch any site. You must first register a domain.

It is used as a part of a URL to identify a website.


Every website has two elements domain name and web hosting. Domain names link to various IP addresses and point to specific servers which host the websites. As we had got to know about the domain name, let us know how it works.


Generic top level domain are divided into five parts i.e  


  1. .com is being used mainly for commercial sites 

  2. . .org for the organisations sites 

  3. . net for networks

  4. .info for information platforms

  5. .edu for educational information

  1. .com - .com is one of the first preferred commonly used top level domain . it is mostly used widespread domain extension and also the most trusted top level domain name extension. Its is mostly used domain for various businesses.  

    

  1. .net  - .net  is been mostly used by the service providers like internet providers, and web hosting and email providers it is a common hub for a wide range of small websites. 


  1. .org  - This extension are mainly used for non profit and other informational organisation. They are not for commercial purpose, they mainly drive traffic for commercial purpose.


  1. .Info -  .Info is been commonly used by informational sites, .info is been designed for the website owners who want to show any information regarding to their business or any other related topic which will be useful for the audience around the world


  1. .edu - .edu is been mainly used by educational institutes this domain is implemented in 1985. It can only registered by U.S based  post secondary institutions. It is one of the seven generic top level domain name which is created in internet domain name system.

  1. When any user name searches for a domain name in a browser, the browser first sends the request to the DNS.

  2. The DNS then will look for the IP address and will pass it to the computer that has files of your website.

  3. The computer will then fetch your website's content and send data back to the browser.  

  4. And now, your website will be displayed to the visitor.
