Difference between a server and a host

Although a server and a host are two different things; most people have still been confused to understand the difference. In this article, all the questions arising in your mind will be answered in every possible way, so without wasting your time, let us start with the introduction part of the server and host. Let us first understand a server.

Web SERVER

A web server, as the name suggests, is basically a web server, a device that hosts one or even more databases and manages the client data access over a network connection. Its basic role is to provide service to the other devices in the network. A server can connect to multiple clients, and a single client can connect to multiple servers.

A server can be both software and hardware. Its role is to provide service to any device that is connected to the network. A server allows standardizing coding and customized server settling as per requirement.

Web Hosting

web hosting allows your website to be live on the internet. Web hosting allocates space on a web server for a website to store its files. Web hosting provides the hosting technology for the secure operation of the website. By hosting your website, you get a special identity on the search engine, and you will be visible on the internet. Web hosting is basically divided into three parts, i.e,

1. Shared hosting - In shared hosting, many users share the same single server and resources, including memory, power, and storage capacity. In short, you will have a single server on which many websites are hosted. Small-scale businesses or companies mainly prefer shared hosting.

2 VPS hosting - In VPS hosting, your website shares a physical, virtual private server with other users. Although it is a virtual server, it provides similar dedicated types of resources to different virtual servers. Although it is more expensive as compared to shared hosting, it gives better performance compared to shared hosting.

3 Dedicated Server hosting - Dedicated hosting, as the name suggests, the dedicated server totally belongs to you. It offers more flexibility as compared to all the other hosting services. Dedicated hosting allows extensive customization, giving you the ability to optimize your server settings.

Now, as you got a brief idea regarding web servers and web hosting, let's jump into the comparison part.

Comparison of Web Server and Web Hosting

  1. Web server is a piece of hardware and software that provides services and basically helps to run the website. Same as web hosting is the process of using a server to host a particular website.

  2.  Web server stores website components software and website files but in case of web hosting it allows websites to be available on the internet.

  3. The main function of a web server is to store, process and deliver webpages to the users. Same as in web hosting its main purpose is to keep secure all the pages of the website.

  4. In web server you can share the server resources and can also take benefits of proper services. In web hosting you can only share and consume resources.

  5. In Web server you can be connected to other devices through LAN and also by the means of internet. In web hosting you can be connected to other devices by the means of internet only.
